What’s An Effective Dose Of Vitamin D?

We’ve provided the highest dose of vitamin D3 possible to positively impact on immunity and optimal health. How have we achieved this?

As we know, adequate vitamin D status is required for calcium absorption and health bones. Vitamin D is also important for a strong immune response. But here’s the thing – there’s a lot more than meets the eye with vitamin D. This vital vitamin is also a hormone and has profound effects on muscle function, heart and brain health and more widely, the inflammatory response. That means when making a call on how much to take, it must be done through the lens of it’s arching effect on multiple areas of body function.

In the UK, the prevalence of low circulating concentrations of vitamin D (circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) <25 nmol/L) often associated with deficiency is around 20% (National Diet and Nutrition Survey). That means 1 in 5 of us could do with a high powdered vitamin D supplement, particularly around the winter months when sunlight exposure is limited. In contrast, the Endocrine Society in the USA suggest that a serum 25(OH)D concentration of more than 75 nmol/L is necessary to maximise the effect of vitamin D on calcium, bone, and muscle metabolism.
Whilst the UK Department of Health recommends 400 i.u vitamin D daily to prevent deficiency, the Endocrine Society suggest 2,000i.u. daily in adults might be better suited to overall health. However, if you’re already tested deficient your doctor may recommend something stronger with some experts recommending around 4,000 i.u. or more daily.

What’s Too High And Unsafe?

Concentrations above 250 nmol/L are considered excessive, with concentrations above 375 nmol l/L being associated with toxicity. Vitamin D treatment appears to be safe at doses of up to 10,000 i.u day, with many in the medical community considering anything over 4,000 i.u. daily as ‘high dose’ and anything above 100,000 i.u. as ‘mega dose’!
